With Windows RT, powerful quad-core processor, camera with Zeiss lenses and 4G connection, the Lumia 2520 began to be sold in Brazil in June. We’re talking about the first tablet launched by Nokia * and, while the latter, since the division of Nokia devices and services was bought by Microsoft.
For 2,599 reais, the value of the Lumia 2520 scared many people. The price of 499 reais Power Keyboard keyboard, trackpad and battery, did not help to make a good impression. Does the Lumia 2520 is a good choice of tablet? How is Windows RT application in question? After two weeks of testing, I can answer these and other questions in this quick review.
* Yes, you’re boring and reminded the Nokia Internet Tablet with Maemo OS, but those do not count!
Design and screen
The Lumia 2520 has a familiar look and follows the design of Lumia smartphones. The polycarbonate body spends a good sense of robustness, while the black model with matte finish, suffer with fingerprints. Even running Windows, Nokia chose to focus only on the essential into a tablet, instead of doing like Microsoft, who placed USB port and SD card reader on the Surface. On the sides, there is Micro USB 3.0, Micro HDMI, headset, power supply (30 watts) connector and the inputs to Micro-SIM and microSD.
The main problem in the design of Lumia 2520 is the weight of 615 grams. It’s true, we’re talking about a giant 10.1-inch, but the competition went through a good diet: we have Z2 Xperia Tablet of 439 grams and 469 grams of iPad Air, both with similar sizes. Despite not being a tijolão, it became difficult to get used to the Lumia 2520 after using lighter tablets – arms tired after a few minutes and the natural action is to seek some support.
The 10.1 inch screen has high brightness, excellent contrast and viewing angle flawless. The resolution of 1920 × 1080 pixels leaves no individual pixel on display at distances of normal use.It is certainly one of the best screens I’ve seen on a tablet. In promotional materials, Nokia highlights the display of the Lumia 2520 has better readability in outdoor locations, and actually delivers what it promises.
Software and Multimedia
Almost two years later, Windows RT still a knot in the minds of many people, so it is worth remembering: this is the same Windows 8 that you are familiar with the desktop and legacy applications (like Paint, Windows Explorer and Command Prompt ), but made for ARM processors and no compatibility with third-party software for Windows. You can only install apps through the Windows Store.
The Windows Store still loses much in quantity and quality to Play Store and App Store, but with a dose of patience gives to make do with the available applications. Some are noted for being well made (like Nextgen Reader and Tweetium), and draws attention to good variety of games: There are titles like FIFA 14 , Asphalt 7: Heat , Halo: Spartan Assault and Six Guns , all supporting scores and achievements Xbox Live.
The Lumia 2520 comes with the full Office 2013, the one that runs on the desktop, with all the resources you have right, then it is a great option for those who need to edit complex documents, which are not always good in other applications systems . Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook are preinstalled. Nokia also puts other applications at the factory as the competent HERE Maps that supports offline maps.
Just like iOS and Windows Phone, the native file support video is weak. Gives up to play videos in MP4 with H.264 codec, but files in MKV containers, for example, are no longer recognized by Windows video player RT. The solution was to use mobile.HD Media Player (£ 6.99), which managed to shoot a film in 1080p just fine without choking and loud.
Nokia puts spectacular cameras in more expensive smartphones. Have a camera of 6.7 megapixels Lumia 2520 can take good pictures, but nothing exceptional, especially considering we’re talking about a product of 2,599 reais. In outdoor shots, it is possible to note a small loss of resolution resulting from post-processing software, and sometimes there is a lack of saturation.Indoors, the noise starts to bother.
Like the Lumia smartphones, the Lumia Nokia 2520 comes with the Camera app, which allows you to change not only the ISO and white balance, but also more advanced settings such as focus and shutter speed. For those who like photography, can you play a little.
Performance, and battery accessories
The Snapdragon 800, one of top of the line chips from Qualcomm, is more than enough to run Windows and RT Metro and several applications at the same time. The animations are fluid system at all times, opening applications is quick (which is expected for a device with flash storage) and games like Asphalt 8: Airborne and FIFA 14 are executed with good graphics and great rate frames.
In one of my tests, I tried to use the Lumia in 2520 as an ordinary notebook, with five tabs open in Internet Explorer desktop and a document being edited in PowerPoint. In this case, the RAM 2 GB began to show insufficient, and there were some hiccups. There is a demerit in any way, but makes clear that the Lumia 2520 is not a substitute for a computer with Windows 8 – it’s just a tablet with more complex operating system to Android and iOS.
Although not a replacement for a PC, can you do a lot of Lumia in 2520, especially with the Power Keyboard, physical keyboard sold separately for 499 dollars. The comfort level is on other keyboards for tablets (better than the virtual keyboard, but worse than a standard desktop keyboard), and there is a trackpad to be used when you get tired of touching the screen. The Power Keyboard adds two USB 2.0 ports, so it’s very practical to connect a mouse or pen drive, but Windows RT does not support Windows drivers – your printer or other peripheral complex probably will not work.
Autonomy proved very good and, with one or two hours sailing per day, the battery of 8,120 mAh Lumia 2520 should hold out for up to three days before requesting a refill. When connected, the Power Keyboard gives a big help. In testing of Netflix, the tablet from Nokia endured by running 5h11min The Godfather: Part II with maximum brightness and Wi-Fi, a good brand. With extra battery keyboard, autonomy was exactly 7h10min. Not bad!
- With 615 grams, the Lumia 2520 is heavy by today’s standards.
- Very expensive for what it offers; Power Keyboard with prohibitive price.
- Quantity and quality of apps than the competition.
- Good battery life.
- Rear camera capable of taking good pictures.
- Excellent screen quality, with high contrast and brightness.
- Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook complete.
I enjoyed the Lumia 2520. Tablet is a fast, well finished and with a display of excellent quality.Windows is a nice system to use on a tablet, and the full Office applications add value to the device. But it’s worth buying a Lumia 2520? If you ask me that question, the answer is no.
The Lumia 2520 is a really good tablet, and I swear I tried, but I can not find any reason to justify the steep price of 2,599 reais, especially considering that the internal storage is not the greatest (32 GB flash memory, with only about 20 GB available to the user) and the application ecosystem is still significantly worse than the iOS and Android. The price of 499 reais Power Keyboard is also difficult to swallow, despite the extra features it adds to the tablet.
For this price, the Lumia 2520 is more expensive than the most expensive version of the tablet which I still consider the best option among the most expensive – iPad 64GB Air with 4G costs 2,499 dollars in the Apple Store 100 dollars cheaper. And this is strange, since the Lumia 2520 is a cheaper tablet in the United States, costing $ 499 ($ 829 versus the iPad specific version of the Air that I mentioned above).
In Brazil, many companies are launching products with high quality and cost-effective.Unfortunately, the Lumia 2520 is one of them.
